Characters July 10

What are the good things about creating your own character? Why? How does creating your own character add to a game?

Adding your own character gives the game your own identity with the different ideas, color of body parts and clothing, etc. It adds a different spin to having your own character plus it may show your personality of the character within the game. It gives a game more ownership to the whole process of developing a game.

Creating your own character gives you the feeling of having more control of the game. It gives players more investment in the events of the game, and gives you the feeling that the character is actually you...OR, it can give you the opportunity to let you feel entirely like somebody/something else, and add to the fantasy aspect of the game. What I've noticed in the way I choose or create characters is that I either pick/create one that looks like me, or I pick/create one that is exactly the opposite of what I look like--depends whether I want to stay closer to reality, or venture out in fantasy.

The good thing about making your own character is you personalize an know what you want. It makes a difference when you personalize it because it just makes it that much more realistic. It adds to the game because it gets you more involved in the game.

Creating your own character allows you to choose your own style. You can decide to be a character that resembles what you look like... your profession, your interests, your talents, etc. Or you can decide to be a monster, an animal or even a person of the opposite sex. It is fun also, to pick out which outfit to wear, glasses or no glasses, hair or no hair, etc. By creating your own character, it really adds to the total experience of the game and in a sense, sort of puts you in the game.

Creating a character is one way for the game user to individualize their play experience. Personalizing an avatar helps the user create a connection to the game and enhance the story. In multiplayer online games, your avatar is also your representation in a social community. Whether it looks like you or not, the choices are a reflection of you.

If the character creation includes characteristics relevant to the game, it could be interesting and a part of a learning experience. I just did the creation part this morning, so I can't comment on that.

As far as creating a character, when it is a cartoon representation of a person, the lack of reality made it a pointless task, for me.

When the characters were silly cartoon dolls, it could be mildly amusing to a child or teen, but far less interesting than actually experimenting with dressing up and doing real stuff!

The analogue to personal growth, which could, or maybe cannot, be a part of character creation and help make users aware of real choices they have in their lives was not addressed in the brief experiences I had with four character creation programs.

There was a clear sexist bias to the "realistic" characters that I found offensive and I see as harmful to children and young people.

Creating your own character helps to be connected to the game since you can customize the character to fit your own personality. It also allows you to stretch outside your usual comfort levels in ability, knowledge, skills, etc. in what you can add to your character. As far as what it contributes to the game is uniqueness of characters and expands the multitude of outcomes in the game.

I like to create my own characters because it does the following:
    1. Gives me a sense of control
    2. Gave me a canvass on which I could experiment
    3. Caused me to become more aware of details
    4. Created a greater consciousness of cultural and ethnic norms
    5. Helped me become aware of styles
And - in Sims3 I could experiment with personality types.

The characters I created interacted in a manner that the personality types might interact. That created a reason to come back and do so more.

At my core, I take ownership of my creations.

I will worry about their well-being now.
