July 9, 2009 Exergame

Which console is your favorite for playing exergames? Why is it better than other consoles?

    I've liked the Wii consoles with the balance board, remote and nunchuck because I get my whole body involved easily and pressure makes a difference. The eye toy gets the body involved but is not a sensitive. The hand controllers like that on the golf game we had yesterday only responds to finger clicks.

    The bigger consoles are my favorite (big screens). They are bigger and better to see and track your progression or score of the game. I'm just getting used to the Wii hand held equipment. Before this 2 wk, I had difficulties, adjusting to the controls and getting used to them. I didn't like the DSs. They are to small to view and hard to do the exergames.

    I enjoyed the Jillian Michael's Game on the Wii today just because there is a verity of things that you can play such as running, boxing, rowing, log jumps and many more that get you active and able to get a good work out. I also like the My Fitness Coach that seems to give you a real work out one that you would get in the gym. My fitness Coach is a little more realistic. The Wii is more of my favorite just because it gets you moving around instead of sitting.

    The one I like the best is the Wii consoles. You really have to get your body in motion and use your strength in swing, etc. to get the best results. Really liked the Wii Fitness since it closely matched your body movements which motivated me to try harder and get a better work out. The balance board is really fun and when I used it to track my balance really showed how I need to strengthen my core since my center of gravity is leaning to the right.
    I also tried the eye toy but doesn't seem to be as closely matched with effort as on the balance board or with the Wii remotes, etc.

    I like the Wii consoles as well. I like the way you are able to experience the game in a much more physical manner, and it isn't terribly difficult to figure out how to use. The Nintendo DS is portable, affordable however it may not be something that I would use as much do to my difficulty with reading smaller print.

    I prefer the Wii console over the other consoles. I like the way the Wii requires the player to move with the system. I found the remote easy to hold and I liked the way the sound goes through the remote to tell you when it is your turn or to inform you that you did a good job. However, pointing the remote exactly right at the T.V was a bit tricky.

    While it is far from perfect, I think the Wii console currently has the most potential for exergames. The sensor bar and the wireless handled controllers capture a variety of movements and forces. Used in conjunction with the balance board or pad, it could create a fun and meaningful exergame experience. Some of the games in Great Outdoor Challenge were fun, but made you work. I find Wii fitness games that do not rely on these types of interactions (like Fitness Coach) far less interesting.

    Sorry guys, I have experienced the consoles as about equal--that is, not ready for prime time. At my age, I am not attracted by novelty for its own sake, and these exercise games all provide an experience that is far below what one can have without any equipment at all. I might as well be frank, even if I were confined to a small cell, I would not voluntarily choose any of these consoles or games over just being left in peace to exercise by myself.

    I don't think this is merely a matter of taste, or my unfamiliarity with the technology--physical education and health education have been an important part of my professional life and teaching from the beginning, and it seems to me that these consoles and games are counter productive to bettering one's health through exercise and also to learning about how to so this.

    First, to improve one's health one needs to develop sensitivity to one's own somatic functioning--to the movements of the breath,the pulse and heartbeat, the condition of energy and muscle tone, etc. etc. not to mention the ramifications of one's metabolism, eating and sleeping, habits, etc. tec., this learning is impeded by the aspects of all these computer mediated exercise schemes by the need to subordinate one's own sensitivity and awareness of one's body, emotions, and mind to the required concentration on the technology itself--manipulating the hardware, and also by the necessity to follow instructions--listen, watch, and follow--these are the opposite of what is needed for successful, lasting, and deep learning.

    Maybe there is a potential here, but I honestly cannot see it. Of course the technology is immature, but what I am saying is that it may be simply inappropriate.

    It's an unrelated thought, but I cringe when I think of all the human and material and financial resources that have been sunk into these devices and software--I can't help thinking that these irreplaceable (not unrenewable) resources are enough to have put a meaningful dent in the basic problem--people in modern societies are sick and getting sicker by the day.

    If we can show that technology is an inappropriate medium with which to address this profound, pressing need--will we have the honesty and will to abandon it?

    Why is there such an, almost religious, faith in technology as a savior, when the only facts out there are that technology has caused pollution, made war vastly more horrendous then it ever was, and increased the range of human suffering to include huge numbers of people suffering from hunger, crime,ignorance, mental ailments like depression and obsessions, diseases like cancer, diabetes, respratory ailments, etc, etc,

    Why do we look there for the solution? If this is a human problem, and what else could it be, then why don't we look for a human, not technological, solution?

    I'm still game though--I considered dropping out the second day, but I want to give it a fail trial, and I will try to be as helpful as I can in my blogs and comments.
