Non Standard Controller July 13

What is your favorite non-standard controller you've played in the Games Lab and with what games? Why?

Favorite would be using the wiimote in a more realistic game, for example: tennis, shooting, golf, table tennis, etc.
Least favorite would be the driving and music instruments controllers. I just don't have a knack for them

My favorite non-standard controller that I played today was the Rock band guitar. I liked this game just because the music gets you into it and it feels like you are really playing. it also works on coordination as well.

It might be a tie for today--the guitar or the steering wheel.

I liked the steering wheel, because it is self-explanatory--you pick it up and start driving (along the way I figured out how to throw objects using a button on the back). I didn't play that many video/arcade games growing up, but when I did, I tended to play the ones where you sit inside of a race car and drive, so I liked the idea of having that sort of arcade setup with the Wii and it's sensitive steering wheel.

The guitar controller, from Guitar Hero/Rock Band, was also quite self-explanatory, but it seemed to have a slightly higher learning curve (which is what I enjoyed about it). The guitar was cool, because it was constant, fast, and was sort of realistic, as far as the shape of the controller compared and the purpose and objectives of the game.

I liked the bongos, Wii steering wheel, and instrument controllers the best. They are all relatively intuitive to use and learn. They provide very entertaining game play and allowed for multiple players to play at the same time. The skateboard thing was, by far, the most difficult to master. The Kilowatt provided the least rewarding game play. These two also appear to be a significant of money and would require major storage space when not in use. While the skateboard thing provides more realistic game play, it seems to have a very narrow use.

  5. I liked the skate board controller because of the balance opportunity on the board. It picked up my balance changes, stops, starts and turns. It was intuitive and like at the skate park I needed to figure out each challenge and obstacle for best results.

I liked the bongo drums because they were a good mimic of real drums, however, they would have been a lot better if they were not plastic renditions of cartoon drums. A real drum could be fitted out with the technology and provide an acoustic sound along with the electronic.

I have a problem when these non-standard inputs are used in "follow the prompt" scenarios. This will only work with some users.

The controllers should also be used for "free play," where the program provides a kind of biofeedback to the users own, creative input. Many people will learn better, faster, and like this kind of computer mediated experience more.

I'm concerned with the "hidden curriculum of these games, with and without their different controllers--are we teaching children and youth to become even more passife and instruyction driven, that is, manipulatable, than before?

I think it depends on the game.
The Rock Band guitar is more interactive versus the Wii remote to actually play the guitar. I tried the Wii music game which just feels like you are making random movements mimicing instruments but not actually playing certain keys to play the notes of the music. I looked at each in what they could teach someone to learn to play an instrument which both provide certain components but not the overall learning experience. Rock Band is fun to play with a group.
For more sports related games - racing, running, etc. the non-standard Wii remotes - wheel, etc. are the best. I didn't necessary like the skateboard game but probably because I wasn't any good and couldn't get the hang of the game which is the same with the Playstation Power Grid Fitness.
Today was fun trying out the different types of controllers.

My favorite non-standard controller that I've used so far was the Wii skateboard with regular hand held controller. I played the Toy Story game with the Woody character doing special tricks with his skateboard. I found that I was somehow drawn to this game and I kept wanting to find the loop and jump over obstacles. I somehow made it into the bathroom, and I wondered... How can I get to the kitchen or bedroom? What sort of items would I find there?
