Frogger was my favorite today because it worked well with the keyboard controls. It challenged my timing and ability to look ahead to pick up visual clues about the next jump.
My lease favorite was Pac-Man classic because the keyboard controls were not like the familiar arcade controller. I could not get the keyboard to be responsive enough. Good memories evaporated into frustration.
Dawn Sanchez - I was excited about trying out the retro games because is what I grew up on as "video games" although at the arcade. I have to say it was very frustrating with pretty much all of the games because once you used up your few lives you were done and had to start over versus other options with the new games and controllers. - My favorite was frogger probably because I almost had all 5 frogs across which gave me more a sense of accomplishment than constantly dying with the other games. It was also easier to control with the directional keys. I always liked this one when I was younger as well. - My lease favorite was donkey kong because you had to be at the exact right point for the litle guy to move up the ladder and I wasn't fast enough or accurate enough to get him in the right place to up the ladder or even to jump the barrels so died each time without getting to the second rung. Pong got old very quickly!!!
Celsa My favorite retro game was probably Tetris. I had never played Tetris before, had heard about it though. It took me a while to figure out the object of the game, and once I did I found it to be entertaining and not too frustrating. My least favorite was Prince of Persia. I just couldn't manage to control the character around the obstacle course. I found myself frustrated and gave up!
Laura My favorite game today was Tetris. I found it fun to race against the clock to fit shapes into the correct places. It was great that the shape could be rotated to fit where needed. I decided that I needed a lot of practice! It was sort of addictive too. My least favorite game that I played was Donkey Kong. I couldn't get very far into the game before I fell off the ladder. The poor princess was never rescued from the gorilla.
Kerry I liked Frogger and Bubble Shooter the best. Frogger was one of my favorite Atari games as a kid. Bubble Shooter is similar to Frozen Bubble which I have on my Mac at home. Once we figured out how to play, Joust was fun.
My least favorite game was pong. Mostly because the computer kicked my bum. It was difficult to use the touch pad to move and I stopped moving if my cursor went outside the flash area.
Bubble shooter was my favorite retro game, because I didn't need skill in how fast I could move the controls, I just needed to look at color patterns and click. It was addicting! I reminded me of Tetris, MahJong, etc. I like games where you don't have to smash as many buttons as possible in a small amount of time to get things to happen on the screen...
My least favorite has always been Pole Position, because I don't feel as though the steering actually works properly (I know that it's really the way I work the controller). And even if I could get the controller to feel as though it was doing what it was supposed to do, I still think going in a circle, at what feels like a very slow speed, isn't fun. I usually end up crashing right away, quiting, and playing Galaga.
I like the retro games, though not enough to play them more than one in a while. They are honest and transparent, and, when there is a puzzle element I like them enough to play once in a while of my own free will!
So that makes bubble/snood or tetris my favorites.
What I dislike is when play depends on arbitrary moves--a good puzzle can be very tough, and require many hours of pay over years, but the moves are there to be deduced/intuited, and the satisfaction is real.
What I really dislike is virtual analogs to real activities, like pong or wii tennis, which I find just plain stupid because the actual action is not pleasurable but a mean derivative. Swinging a tennis racket or leaning into a curve on skates, or even in a car, can be fun and exciting, but sitting with a computer input device is fake and imagining that one is having fun remains a creepy and objectionable activity to me.
Besides the puzzle aspect, none of the retro games seems to me to have any learning value at all.
Nicole My favorite retro game was frogger I liked this games just because there was many different levels and it kept my attention. My least favorite game was the Donkey Kong I think just because I could no get the hang of all the movements and which way was up or jump ect.

ReplyDeleteSpace invaders was my favorite today. Why because it was a favorite childhood game in the video arcade.
Donkey Kong was my least favorite. Why because it was frustrating and it definitely raised my blood pressure both as an adult and as a child.
